Catawba Cricket Hatchery began in 1952 as a small operation in the backyard of founders Grady and Willie Norton in Charlotte, N.C. During the early days, working side-by-side, the couple oversaw all aspects of the business from raising and distributing the live bait, i.e. crickets and worms, to managing the financial and business operations.
As business increased a temporary site was purchased in the small neighboring town of Shuffletown, N.C. In 1962 a location off Rozzelle's Ferry Road in West Charlotte was purchased to accommodate the continued growth. With four additions to the original building, the addition of a minnow shed, refrigeration buildings and a new office building, this site has proven to be an excellent choice and continues to serve as the current business location.
Over the years the family continued to expand their product offerings from crickets and worms to a larger variety of live bait, as well as fishing tackle and boat accessories to service the fishing industry. Currently the business is under second-generation ownership, having been passed down to two of their sons. Grady, however, continues to be actively involved.
Rick and Ron are proud to carry on their parents legacy and continue to grow the business by expanding their market region using mobile display trucks and on-boarding technology equipment to better service their clients.
In 2012 they have further enhanced services by launching this first website portal www.catawbacricket.com.
The owners and staff extend a sincere and heartfelt "Thank You" to their loyal customers for their continued success.
